OpenSAGE
OpenSAGE/OpenSAGE
OpenSAGE: a free reimplementation, written in C#, of SAGE, the 3D real-time strategy engine EA Pacific used in Command & Conquer: Generals and other games. It focuses on Generals and its Zero Hour expansion, and it also has modules for The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth I and II. It started as a black-box reimplementation, written from the data files and from watching the game run; in March 2025 it switched its license from LGPL v3 to GPL v3 and began adapting parts of the Generals and Zero Hour source code EA released, such as map triggers, money, state machines, and locomotors. It isn’t playable yet: it loads most file formats from the first SAGE games, loads into maps, and shows the user interface, but it implements very little of the gameplay. It renders with Direct3D 11, OpenGL 4.3, or Metal on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and comes with a viewer for browsing the files of any installed SAGE game. The latest release is 0.3.0 (October 29, 2018); since April 2025 the code has barely changed beyond dependency updates. One of its more than 3,600 commits lists Copilot as a co-author.
You needAn installation of your own copy of Command & Conquer: Generals or Zero Hour, for example from The First Decade or The Ultimate Collection; on Linux and macOS, the game folder is set with the CNC_GENERALS_PATH environment variable. Plus 64-bit Windows, Linux, or macOS; to build the current code, .NET 8.

Command & Conquer: Generals / Zero Hour (GeneralsGameCode)
TheSuperHackers/GeneralsGameCode
GeneralsGameCode: TheSuperHackers’ community project to fix and improve Command & Conquer: Generals and its Zero Hour expansion, built on the source code of both games that Electronic Arts released in 2025; its main focus is Zero Hour. The code was moved from Visual Studio 6 and C++98 to Visual Studio 2022 and C++20, though the weekly builds are still compiled with Visual Studio 6. For now it keeps compatibility with Generals 1.08 and Zero Hour 1.04, leaving the fixes that would break it for later. It fixes critical bugs and many minor ones, and decouples the drawing of particles, animations, water, trees, and other effects from the logic step, with interpolation, so they move smoothly above 30 frames per second. It adds MSAA and anisotropic filtering, recovers 481 higher-resolution textures Zero Hour never ended up using, rotates the camera in 45-degree steps, shows frame rate, latency, and money per minute, adds a player info list, and improves replays with a replay archive and their dates. Fixes to the game’s data (INI files, interface, maps, textures) live in a separate project, GeneralsGamePatch. It publishes a build every week, the latest on October 16. 14 of its roughly 2,000 commits, all from September, list Claude as a co-author.
You needAn installation of your own copy of Command & Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour, such as the one in Command & Conquer: The Ultimate Collection on Steam; the weekly build’s files are extracted into the game folder. Plus Windows; on Linux it can be built with Docker and installed into the game with its scripts.
Command & Conquer: Generals / Zero Hour (Thyme)
TheAssemblyArmada/Thyme
Thyme: an open-source reimplementation of Generals: Zero Hour in C++. It’s a bottom-up rewrite of the game that uses the original executable for functions not yet implemented, with the intent of fixing bugs, adding features, and porting the game to platforms the original didn’t support. Today it only runs on Windows. Its own launcher only supports the English disc version of Generals: Zero Hour patched to 1.04; running it any other way means following the README’s instructions. It has no affiliation with EA. Licensed GPL-2.0; the “latest” tag and the last commit are from October 31, 2024.
You needYour own installation of Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour; with the project’s launcher, the English Windows disc version patched to 1.04 (the README links the patch). Windows.

Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour (Zero Hour Reforged)
olcayseygan/CnCGeneralsZH-Reforged
Zero Hour Reforged: Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour rebuilt from the source code Electronic Arts released in February 2025, moved to Visual Studio 2022 and 64-bit and, since October, to SDL3 for macOS and Linux, with no Wine or Proton. It renders with Direct3D 11 or 9 on Windows, Metal on macOS, and Vulkan on Linux and Steam Deck, with an uncapped frame rate and more of the battlefield on ultrawide screens. It fixes about sixty bugs EA shipped in 2003, most of them found by automated tests, and changes the game: the skirmish AI finally builds a base and scouts without seeing through the fog of war, vehicles accelerate and brake, each kill’s veterancy is shared among everything that damaged the target, and there’s a balance pass, a new command bar, much faster pathfinding and effects, the base game’s 481 original textures at four times the resolution of Zero Hour’s, new shadows and lighting, an option to go back to the 2003 look, and Turkish and German text. LAN multiplayer works; internet play and gamepads don’t yet. On Windows, a launcher installs it over your game, backing up what it replaces, and keeps it up to date; on macOS and Linux it’s built with a single command. The latest release, v3.2.0 (October 20), locked matches to 60 steps a second with an optional Turbo mode and opened every campaign mission. Its website says code changes are made with AI assistance, and 87 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author. The repository also includes modified versions of game data files, such as the skirmish AI scripts and the interface screens, and on Windows the build script downloads a pack of upscaled game art from the repository’s own releases, which on macOS and Linux is copied by hand or left out.
You needAn installation of your own copy of Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour along with the original Generals (Zero Hour uses the files of both), preferably the 1.04 release from Steam or the EA app; the project includes no game files. On macOS and Linux it finds installs in Steam libraries, ~/Games, /Applications, and CrossOver and Whisky bottles on its own, and a script lays the games out from a disc or an ISO, though the discs carry 1.00. Plus 64-bit Windows, macOS (Apple silicon or Intel), or x86-64 Linux.
