Diablo / Hellfire (DevilutionX)

diasurgical/DevilutionX

DevilutionX: a port of Diablo and its Hellfire expansion for modern systems, built on Devilution, Diablo’s source code reconstructed by reverse engineering the executable, with help from the debug symbols of the Japanese PlayStation release and a debug build of the PC game. There are builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and for many other platforms too. It adds custom resolutions and aspect ratios, widescreen, high frame rates, full gamepad support, multiplayer over TCP/IP and ZeroTier (no port forwarding needed), a stash for storing items, and options such as picking up gold and potions automatically or showing monster health and experience bars, off by default, plus many fixes for bugs in the original. It’s translated into more than 20 languages and comes with modding tools. The latest release is 1.5.5 (October 30, 2025). Since May, 19 of its more than 12,000 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needThe DIABDAT.MPQ file from your own copy of Diablo, from the CD or the GOG or Battle.net release; for the shareware portion, the free spawn.mpq is enough. For Hellfire, also hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq, and hfvoice.mpq. With the GOG release installed on Windows, nothing needs copying. Plus Windows (XP included), Linux, or macOS.

Diablo (Freeablo)

wheybags/freeablo

Freeablo: a modern, cross-platform reimplementation of the Diablo engine, played with the original game’s data files. You can walk around town, with its animated characters and dialogue, go down through generated dungeons on every level, fight in melee (with limited ranged combat and magic), pick up monster loot, buy from and sell to Griswold, level up, save and load, and play multiplayer. The code after the latest release adds magic item generation, potions, healing at Pepin, the Town Portal spell, and mouse wheel zoom. Its author archived it on April 13, 2023, having lost motivation on seeing the progress of the Devilution team, who got to the finish first. The latest release is 0.4 (March 6, 2020), for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

You needDIABDAT.MPQ and Diablo.exe from your own copy of Diablo, patched to 1.09; the GOG release works too. Plus Windows, Linux, or macOS.

Diablo (DGEngine)

dgcor/DGEngine

DGEngine: an implementation of the Diablo engine, written in C++ with SFML, in which the whole game is described in JSON files, played with the original game’s data files. With them it runs Diablo and its Hellfire expansion; also Diablo Flare, with the free assets of the game Flare, and Diablo Extended, which mixes Diablo’s and Flare’s. From Diablo II it loads the assets, except the level textures. According to its wiki, last edited in May 2021, it reproduces the original menus and lets you enter levels from the town, but nearly everything inside the game itself (items, players, spells) is missing, as is multiplayer. The latest release is 1.2 (December 22, 2023), for 32- and 64-bit Windows and Linux (AppImage, also in a variant with FFmpeg), and the last commit, from July 2025, fixes the build. The repository includes the English text of Diablo’s townspeople dialogue and quests (about 60 KB).

You needThe DIABDAT.MPQ file from your own copy of Diablo; for Hellfire, also hellfire.mpq, hfmonk.mpq, hfmusic.mpq, and hfvoice.mpq. Plus Windows or Linux.

Diablo (DamnationX)

trygentic/damnationx

DamnationX is a build of DevilutionX, the Diablo port built on the reconstructed source code of the game, with optional HD art, a native 3D engine, an online lobby, and sound packs imported from your copy of Diablo II or Diablo II: Resurrected. The game runs in 3D, Classic, or HD 2D mode, with optional ray tracing on supported graphics cards; there are desktop builds for Windows, Linux (x64 and ARM64), and macOS (Apple Silicon), a browser build using WebGPU, and, according to the README, Android stayed on beta 7. The repository publishes only the game core and the launcher: the native 3D engine, Toxoid, is distributed only compiled, is its author’s proprietary software, and its source isn’t published, and DamnationX itself is distributed under the Sustainable Use License, for non-commercial use only. The HD art pack isn’t on the GitHub releases: the README only says it is distributed separately, without saying where it is hosted or where that art comes from, so it isn’t stated whether it derives from Diablo’s. The latest release is beta 8.2 (October 25). The repository isn’t a GitHub fork and its 28 commits come from two authors; none lists Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own copy of Diablo: the folder with DIABDAT.MPQ (from GOG or Battle.net, or copied from the original CD); SPAWN.MPQ works for the shareware part. For desktop, 64-bit Windows 10 or later with a Direct3D 12 or Vulkan graphics card, Linux (Ubuntu 24.04 or compatible, glibc 2.39, Vulkan), or an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 26.2 or later. The optional sound packs and Diablo II: Resurrected art are imported from your own installation and require Python 3.11 or later.
