Gen1Recomp

bryanthaboi/gen1recomp

A native Lua/LÖVE recreation of the first three generations of Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Despite the name, it no longer stops at the first generation. The engine and map behavior are hand-written; the game data and graphics are decoded from a ROM the player supplies. It’s a recreation, not a static recompilation. There are Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS builds, among others. Beware: the gen1recomp.com website isn’t the project’s, and its author asks people not to download anything from it.

Pokémon Gold / Silver / Crystal (Gen2Recomped)

UNDERdecoded/Gen2Recomped

Gen2Recomped: a native Lua/LÖVE recreation of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, forked from Gen1Recomp, which is also in this catalog. As in the original, the engine, script VM, and map behavior are hand-written, and the data, graphics, and sound are decoded from your ROM when you import it. On top of Gen1Recomp’s engine it adds its own Generation II half (the Gold and Silver script VM, Johto and Kanto, day and night, breeding, the Pokégear, shinies, and held items) and has gone further since: it also imports FireRed and Emerald (alpha), Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, and White (pre-alpha), and the Polished Crystal and Prism romhacks. Around the games there’s a Monster Walker inspired by the Pokéwalker, map and save editors, machine translation into 25 languages, cloud saves, the DRAMATIC_SHAPE voxel renderer, and link play over UDP. There are builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam Deck, Android, and iOS, plus homebrew Switch, Xbox in Dev Mode, and the Anbernic RG34XXSP. The Generation II components aren’t open source but source-available. 65 of its 378 commits list Claude as co-author. Version 0.8.45 came out on October 20.

You needYour own dump of Pokémon Gold, Silver, or Crystal (revision 0 or 1) for Game Boy Color, or of another supported game, which the importer checks by SHA-1 before creating anything; it’s only needed at import. Plus Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS; to run it from source, LÖVE 11 and Python 3.
