Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame

Supermedo/prince-of-persia-2-windows

A static recompilation of the DOS PRINCE.EXE to C, linked with a small Windows runtime: the game logic, rendering, intro, and music driver are the original code, and only the PC hardware (VGA, timer, keyboard, Sound Blaster/AdLib) is replaced with native code, with no DOSBox or emulator. The repository holds the recompiler, written in Python, which decodes the 8086 code, plus the runtime and the launcher; the game’s C code is generated on your machine from your copy, and the published release ships a prebuilt pop2.exe with no game data, art, or music. It emulates a Sound Blaster Pro: the game’s own FM driver, recompiled, plays the music on an emulated OPL2 no matter how your copy was set up in the DOS SETUP, and effects play as digital samples. It draws with OpenGL, with filters (Sharp, which keeps pixels crisp at any size, Pixel, Soft, and Smooth HQ) and 4:3, stretched, or panorama views, the last stretching only the sides, and supports Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch controllers. All 14 levels, the intro, the endings, saved games, and the 75-minute limit behave just as under DOS; the only addition is optional per-room checkpoints, off by default. Version 1.0 came out on September 23.

You needYour own copy of the DOS Prince of Persia 2: the folder with PRINCE.EXE and the .DAT files. Plus 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Building it takes clang and llvm-rc (LLVM for Windows) and Python 3.

Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame (Mac)

dmucli/pop2-port

An unofficial native port of the 1993 Macintosh version for macOS, Linux, Recalbox, and retro handhelds. The original 68k program was decompiled with Ghidra and translated, function by function, into C, and a reimplementation of the classic Mac Toolbox runs it on top of SDL. The translated code is in the repository (src/game/), but the Ghidra project and the game data are not: the data is read from a disk image of your copy. It adds save states with pictures, rewind, an on-screen menu, statistics, gamepad support, and optional cheats (infinite health or time, jump to any level). It is verified by replaying every call on the original 68k code with the Musashi emulator, which only remains in development builds. Version 0.2 (October 17) publishes packages for macOS, Linux (x86_64 and arm64), Recalbox, and PortMaster of 1.2 to 2.5 MB; there is no Windows version. 63 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own disk image of the Macintosh Prince of Persia 2 (floppy, CD, or hard disk) in a common format (.hfv, .dsk, .img, .image, .toast, .iso, .cdr, or MacBinary .bin); an emulator disk (Basilisk II, SheepShaver, Mini vMac) with the game installed also works. Plus macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon, 64-bit Linux (x86_64 or arm64), Recalbox, or a handheld with PortMaster.
