Test Drive II: The Duel (Buyukcaglar)

Buyukcaglar/TD2

A native Windows version of Test Drive II: The Duel that plays the DOS game from your own copy of its files, in four graphics modes you can switch between at any moment, even mid-race: EGA, CGA, Hercules, and Amiga. With the Amiga version’s files it also plays its music and sound and adds the Amiga-only Northern Germany Challenge scenery. It is not an emulator: the game code is a C reimplementation of the original executable, built on Kylofon’s SDL3 port (Krzysztof Kania, MIT licence), and the repository publishes that code, the recovery tools, and the documentation. It adds an improved model of the PC speaker, Amiga sound through an emulation of Paula, controller support, and a menu of its own. It ships as a single TD2.exe of about 4 MB, unsigned. Version 1.0 (October 25) is the latest of two releases from the same day. It states it was written largely by AI coding assistants (Claude); its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own copy of the DOS Test Drive II: the base game is enough (two cars and the Master scenery), as a folder with TD2EGA.EXE, CARS.DAT, SCENES.DAT and the rest, or as a zip, 7z, rar, or lha archive. Optional: the expansions (The Supercars, The Muscle Cars, California Challenge, European Challenge) and the Amiga version (for example a WHDLoad .lha). Plus 64-bit Windows and a writable folder for the program.

Test Drive II: The Duel (Enhanced)

kylofon/testdrive2-enhanced

An enhanced version of Test Drive II: The Duel (Accolade / Distinctive Software, 1989) in EGA, native on Windows with SDL3. The game is the faithful C reimplementation of TD2EGA.EXE; the road view is redrawn from the original data at four times the resolution (1280 × 800 by default), 60 frames per second, and a draw distance of 180 units instead of 60. It has options for banded road and ground, for mixing cars from other sceneries, and for adjusting game speed, plus a map viewer to fly along the stages and launchers for the game and the viewer. The latest version, 0.3.0 (September 24), is a 64-bit Windows zip of about 10.6 MB. 71 of its 72 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own files of the DOS Test Drive II, ideally The Collection, in a folder named Game next to the program: TD2EGA.EXE, CARS.DAT, SCENES.DAT, SONGS.BIN, VOICES.BIN, the *.PES archives, the car *.BIN and *.SS files, and the scenery *.DAT, *.SGN, and *.FNT files. Plus Windows and a multi-core CPU.

Test Drive II: The Duel (SDL3)

kylofon/test-drive-2-sdl3

A native Windows port of Test Drive II: The Duel (Accolade / Distinctive Software, 1989), a C reimplementation with SDL3 of the EGA version (TD2EGA.EXE) made by reverse engineering; it is not an emulator. It can be played with the cars and sceneries of The Collection, including the Supercars / Muscle Cars and California / European Challenge add-ons; the CGA, Hercules, and Tandy versions are not ported yet. It removes the copy protection and disk handling, draws the driving view at an emulated 15 frames per second, and uses a gamepad as the joystick. The only release, 0.1.0 (September 17), is a 64-bit Windows zip. All 9 of its commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own files of the DOS Test Drive II, ideally The Collection, in a folder named Game: TD2EGA.EXE, CARS.DAT, SCENES.DAT, SONGS.BIN, VOICES.BIN, the *.PES archives, the car *.BIN and *.SS files, and the scenery *.DAT, *.SGN, and *.FNT files. The folder must be writable. Plus Windows.
