The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Athelas)
Shagg88/Athelas
A native Windows port of the US Xbox release by static recompilation with XboxXBE-Recomp. It ships inside Athelas, a launcher for three Lord of the Rings games that also includes the port of the Xbox version of The Return of the King and ROTK Fix, a patch for that game’s PC version. By default it plays as it did on the Xbox, and as options it adds widescreen, higher frame rates, sharper graphics, keyboard and mouse, and an in-game settings menu. It has been reported working on the Steam Deck through Proton. Its author states it was made with help from Claude.
You needYour own US copy of The Two Towers for Xbox, as an .iso image or extracted. Plus 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 12 graphics card.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Gumpolas)
Gumpolas/TooTawersRecomp
The Two Towers Recompiled: a native port of the US Xbox release by static recompilation with xboxrecomp, separate from the one in Athelas. It runs on Windows and Linux, and experimentally on macOS (Intel, or Apple silicon through Rosetta 2). It draws with Direct3D 11, Vulkan (DXVK, included), or OpenGL, with 1x–12x internal resolution, 4:3 to 32:9 with the HUD at the screen’s edges and widescreen cutscenes, MSAA, FXAA, and anisotropic filtering. It runs at 30 fps as on the Xbox, or at 60, 75, 90, 100, 120, 144, 165, 200, 240, or 300, or experimentally uncapped. It has keyboard and mouse with everything rebindable, mouse aiming and steering, controllers with rumble, in-game options pages, and a settings panel (F10). It translates every text in the game, subtitles included, into 33 languages besides English. Its “Ultra textures” bring the game’s menus, text, and HUD upscaled 4x and can use the GLOS69 GameCube texture pack, downloaded separately. It includes as mods the ECTS 2002 demo’s HUD, orange health pickups, and seven new playable heroes. Its README says the game is fully playable, though not everything works perfectly yet. Version 1.9.5 (October 21) moved more of the game to native code and fixed bugs at high frame rates and sound dropouts. Two of its commits, those for versions 1.9.2 and 1.9.4, list Claude as co-author. The repository and the download include the translations of the game’s text into those 33 languages; the original English text is taken from your copy.
