Dungeon Keeper (KeeperFX)

Game: Dungeon Keeper (Windows, 1997)

KeeperFX (Dungeon Keeper Fan eXpansion): a fan-rewritten version of Dungeon Keeper that fixes, enhances, and modernizes the game. Tomasz Lis (Mefistotelis) started it in April 2008 as a DLL made from the Dungeon Keeper Gold executable, whose code was gradually decompiled and rewritten; on December 28, 2022, the last parts of the original code were rewritten and KeeperFX became a program of its own, with no DLL. It adds higher resolutions, higher frame rates with graphics decoupled from game logic, modernized controls and controller support, many bug fixes, improved AI, online multiplayer, and new campaigns, maps, creatures, and traps, plus many mapmaking and modding options, with Lua scripting. It’s available in 17 languages, some of them partial. Version 1.4.0 (July 4) reworked multiplayer: it lists open lobbies, supports up to four players, copes with high ping, and needs no port forwarding. According to its wiki, GOG also offers it as a “One-click Mod.” Also according to its wiki, the complete package includes some of the original Dungeon Keeper data, many of those files modified or remade. Two of its commits, from August 2025, say Claude Code named previously unnamed fields.

You needA few files from your own copy of Dungeon Keeper: from the original CD (English or multilingual, Dungeon Keeper Gold included) or the GOG, Steam, or EA release. The launcher copies them on its own; there are 16 of them (palettes, the two slab files, and three sound banks). The Deeper Dungeons add-on alone doesn’t have them. Plus Windows 7, 10, or 11; the web installer needs Windows 10 or later.
