Gunstar Heroes
Game: Gunstar Heroes (Mega Drive / Genesis, 1993)
A C rewrite of Gunstar Heroes (Mega Drive/Genesis, US release) for Linux, Windows, and macOS. According to its README, the cartridge’s roughly 4,400 routines, the 68000’s and the Z80’s, have been rewritten in C and checked one by one against the original using recordings of play made with Genesis Plus GX, which is only a development tool: the game emulates neither the 68000 nor the Z80, and uses the pulseman submodule for the VDP, PSG, YM2612, and pads, with SDL2. It runs at 60 frames per second without the cartridge’s slowdown, with two players, save states anywhere (eight slots), rewind, fast-forward, GIF capture, pixel filters, and online play with rollback. Still pending is, among other things, frame-by-frame lockstep against the original. Version 0.2.2 is from October 21. All 82 of its commits list Claude as a co-author.
