Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (KAIN2)
Game: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver → (PS1, 1999)
KAIN2: a decompilation of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for PS1 with its own port for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Since the original source code was lost, it translates the game’s MIPS code to C, and only accepts functions that, rebuilt with the original compiler, match the binary of a press review build from July 14, 1999; its progress badge shows 78% of the US release (SLUS-00708). The game runs on Valkyrie, an emulation layer made for porting PS1 games to PC, with SDL2. Compared with the official PC port, the project aims to restore the dynamic music system, allow new levels, and add full controller support and achievements, and later a menu to pick the graphics API. There are no releases: you have to build it, and a debug build generates the list of functions the game calls that are still missing. Its last commit is from April 2024.
You needThe BIGFILE.DAT and LOCALS.TBL files from your own copy of Soul Reaver, next to the executable; debug builds also need BIGFILE.DAT’s contents extracted with the repository’s tool. Plus Windows 7 to 11, Linux, or macOS, and building it yourself with CMake 3.24.1 or later (on Linux, from a 32-bit distribution); 64-bit support is a work in progress.
