Marathon Trilogy (Aleph One)
Games: Marathon (Classic Mac OS, 1994) · Marathon 2: Durandal (Classic Mac OS, 1995) · Marathon Infinity (Classic Mac OS, 1996)
Aleph One: an open-source continuation of the Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity engine, born from the Marathon 2 source code Bungie released under the GPL in 2000; Bungie released Marathon Infinity’s source as well in 2011. It plays all three Marathon games, originally released for the Mac, and dozens of community scenarios, from new levels to total conversions, picked with a scenario chooser. There are builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux (as a Flatpak), and the three games are on Steam as Classic Marathon, Classic Marathon 2, and Classic Marathon Infinity, with achievements and Steam Workshop. It can run at 30 fps like the original or with interpolation at 60 or 120 fps or uncapped, and it adds 3D audio with HRTF, Lua scripting, game recording with video export, and multiplayer and co-op for up to eight players over LAN or the internet, with a lobby to find games, dedicated servers so no router setup is needed, and monthly leaderboards with an optional lhowon.org account. The latest release, 1.11.1 (September 30), fixes bugs and security issues. Each game’s download includes its data, which Bungie allowed to be distributed for free in 2005 and which the project distributes under a limited license Bungie granted it in 2021.
You needNo copy needed: Bungie has allowed the three games to be distributed for free since 2005, and each of the project’s downloads already includes the game data, which can also be downloaded separately from its website. Plus Windows, macOS, or Linux.
