Serial Experiments Lain
Game: Serial Experiments Lain (PS1, 1998)
A decompilation of Serial Experiments Lain, Pioneer LDC’s 1998 PlayStation game, and a native client for Windows, macOS, and Linux built from it. All 321 game functions are rewritten in C and, compiled with the original PsyQ toolchain, rebuild the retail executable byte for byte (the PsyQ libraries link from their original code); progress can be followed on decomp.dev. The client runs a 64-bit copy of that code on a reimplementation of the PlayStation SDK based on PsyCross, with no emulator, and according to the project it plays the whole game: both sites, every voice session and movie, the disc swap, and all four endings; game logic and pacing were measured on real hardware. It adds resolution scaling, fullscreen, optional 60 fps motion interpolation at the original speed, subtitle (.srt or .ass) and dub packs, memory card image saves that work in emulators, cheats, a tab showing disc content the game never uses, and, since v0.2.0 (October 1), mods: replacing pictures, text, voices, movies, and game data, HD texture packs, Lua scripts that hook any game function, and native plugins. The launcher can download the laingame.net English fan subtitles from their source; none are bundled. A full playthrough in a single run, real controllers, and Linux on real hardware are still untested.
You needYour own dumps of both discs of the Japanese release (SLPS-01603 and SLPS-01604) in Redump format (.cue + .bin); the client verifies them and copies them to its data folder. Plus 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, Apple silicon macOS, or x86-64 Linux with glibc 2.35 or later and OpenGL 3.2. Building the decompilation requires Python 3 and Docker.
