Sonic R

Game: Sonic R (Windows, 1998)

Sonic R, Sega’s 1998 racing game for PC, rebuilt from its executable: the code was decompiled with Ghidra and translated from x86 to modern, portable C, which runs with SDL2 on Windows, macOS, and Linux and, sharing the same game code, on the Sega Dreamcast with KallistiOS. Version 1.0 came out on September 12 and 1.0-bugfix1 on September 15, mostly fixing graphical issues; the only published file is SONICR.EXE (9.7 MB), for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 with no dependencies. On other systems you build it yourself with the repository’s guides, which also cover network play. The project says it was checked against WinDbg sessions on the original SONICR.EXE and by fan playtesting, and that the only single-player behavior differences it couldn’t attribute to something else come from moving from 80-bit x87 floating point to IEEE. It discloses its use of AI: the reverse engineering and translation were done with Ghidra and Claude Code. The repository carries only a few support files in DATA/ (the network icons and the pre-encoded sound effects).

You needYour own copy of Sonic R for PC (1998): the tracks, models, textures, and music come from it. 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 for the published SONICR.EXE; on macOS and Linux, you build it.
