Supaplex (OpenSupaplex)
Game: Supaplex (DOS, 1991)
OpenSupaplex: a 1:1 reimplementation in C and SDL of Supaplex, the 1991 puzzle game, whose source code was lost; fans disassembled it, fixed bugs, and added features (the so-called SpeedFix), and OpenSupaplex recreates that version. It only changes what’s needed to play with a controller and to port it to any platform, and new features that alter the game must be optional. There are builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS, as well as PSP, PS Vita, PS2, PS3, Nintendo DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, Switch, and RISC OS. Its tests replay thousands of level solutions recorded by players to check that it behaves like the original, and in October it kept tweaking details to match it. Version 7.2 (March 22) added Nintendo DS, RISC OS, and PS2 and moved the music to MOD and the sound effects to WAV to use less CPU; the latest is 7.2.2 (March 30). Two of its last 100 commits list Copilot as a co-author. Supaplex is freeware, and the repository includes the original game’s files and level packs, plus the disassembly of the executable (about 670 KB) and an IDA database with it.
You needNo copy needed: Supaplex is freeware and the game files are included. 64-bit Windows, Linux, or macOS.
