Test Drive Unlimited (OpenTDU)
Game: Test Drive Unlimited → (Windows, 2006)
OpenTDU: a port of the PC version of Test Drive Unlimited made by reverse engineering: structures, classes, and functions are reconstructed in Ghidra from the original x86 executable and rewritten in C++17. It aims to be a new client that fixes the game’s problems on modern systems (AI, rendering, security) and runs on several platforms: graphics move from Direct3D 9 to Vulkan, with parts of DXVK, and there are nightly builds for 32- and 64-bit Windows (also for Windows 7), x86-64 Linux, and Apple silicon macOS. It’s a work in progress, and progress is tracked by game mode: done so far are, among others, free ride, the map, the home, the car dealerships, the garage, the tuning shop, the clothes shop, the real estate agencies, the login screen, and the boat tour, while missions, challenges, the club, the lobby, and the intro are still in progress. It has windowed mode, an adjustable frame rate cap, an FPS counter, and debug menus, and in October it added traffic, motorbikes, controller rumble, and the back-on-track reset. The latest nightly build is from October 19. One of its last 100 commits, the one that added the -car option, lists Claude as a co-author. The repository includes about 11 MB of pedestrian navigation zones, computed from the game’s AI roads.
You needYour own copy of Test Drive Unlimited for PC, in the version the project calls MC 1.66A. The OpenTDU executable and its EURO folder are copied into the game folder, and that EURO folder is merged with the original one, not replacing it. Plus Windows (also Windows 7), x86-64 Linux, or Apple silicon macOS, and a Vulkan graphics card.
