The Legend of Dragoon
Game: The Legend of Dragoon (PS1, 1999)
Severed Chains: The Legend of Dragoon brought to PC from the game’s assembly code, disassembled and rewritten by hand in Java. It isn’t an emulator and needs no BIOS: assets are extracted from your discs on first launch, and the code includes nothing official from the game. Monoxide began decompiling it in December 2020 and now maintains it with a small team. It’s fully playable with no known crashes and fixes many of the original’s bugs. Always on: near-instant loading, no disc swapping, 60 fps outside battles, unlimited save slots, and keyboard or controller. As options: native 4K and beyond, true widescreen in battle and on the world map, a CRT filter, saving almost anywhere, faster game speed, skippable movies, swapping Additions mid-battle, removing the 9,999 damage cap or the need to have Dart in the party, and a modding API that several projects already use. Its authors state that no AI was used to make it. Version 3.0 (October 17) is the first recommended build since July 2023.
You needYour own four discs of the North American release of The Legend of Dragoon (SCUS-94491, SCUS-94584, SCUS-94585, and SCUS-94586), dumped as raw ISO or BIN images (2,352 bytes per sector) in the isos folder; the European and Japanese releases won’t work. Plus Windows, macOS (Intel or Apple silicon), Linux (x86-64 or ARM64), or Steam Deck, an OpenGL 3.3 graphics card, and an internet connection on first launch, when Java 25 is downloaded.
