Warcraft II (Wargus)
Games: Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (DOS, 1995) · Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal (DOS, 1995)
Wargus: Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and its Beyond the Dark Portal expansion on Stratagus, a free real-time strategy engine. The repository holds the importer, which on first launch asks for your copy of Warcraft II and extracts and converts its data (graphics, sound, music, videos, and campaigns), and the Lua scripts that recreate the game. It looks and sounds almost exactly like Warcraft II, with very similar gameplay and slight enhancements in the style of StarCraft and other more modern strategy games. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, plays in high resolution with OpenGL shaders to change the look, has LAN and online multiplayer, and lets you tweak many game parameters in Lua or from the command line. The latest stable release is 3.3.2, from July 2022, and development builds are made from every commit. On macOS you use a GitHub Actions build and, until its own extractor works properly there, the data is extracted with a third-party script.
You needYour own copy of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, with Beyond the Dark Portal if you want its campaign; the importer recognizes, among others, the DOS CD release and the Battle.net Edition. Plus Windows, Linux (an Ubuntu PPA and openSUSE packages), or macOS.
