Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Game: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2, 2004)
DQ8Recomp: an experimental native port of the US PS2 release (SLUS-21207), built with PS2Recomp. The game’s MIPS code is translated to C++ on your machine and linked to a runtime that implements the PS2 services it uses; graphics go through SDL3 GPU or a software reference renderer, and sound comes from the game’s own drivers, running on an emulated IOP. Its author is clear that it’s a development project, not a finished port: it boots, loads saves, and reaches field gameplay with music, effects, speech, and movies, and on an Apple M1 Pro the opening field holds the game’s 30 fps cap, but the rest of the game and other hardware haven’t been checked yet, and support for the European version is incomplete. It adds an in-game menu (F1) with internal resolution, sound, remappable controls, pause, fast-forward, and screenshots. A launcher for Windows, macOS, and Linux (ARM64 too) checks your disc image, installs anything missing, such as a C++ compiler, and builds the game in about ten minutes. 29 of its 143 commits list Claude as a co-author. The latest build is from October 11.
You needA disc image (.iso) of your own US copy of Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 (SLUS-21207). Plus Windows, macOS, or Linux with about 8 GB of free space; the launcher installs a C++ compiler if it’s missing (Visual Studio Build Tools on Windows, the Command Line Tools on macOS) and, on Windows, downloads FFmpeg once. No game files are included.
