Killer Instinct
Games: Killer Instinct (Arcade, 1994) · Killer Instinct 2 (Arcade, 1996)
UltraCombo: native PC ports of the Killer Instinct (1994) and Killer Instinct 2 (1996) arcade games, for Windows and Linux. It is one program that runs the arcade games’ own code, translated to C for your PC (prepared on first launch), with the board around it emulated: Midway’s DCS sound board and the IDE hard disk. On top it adds what a home version needs: shaders and CRT looks, rebindable controllers and controls, save states, rewind, run-ahead, a training mode, and rollback netplay. It supports Killer Instinct L1.5D (default) and L1.4 and Killer Instinct 2 L1.4. Version 1.1.0 (October 23, prerelease) also translates the sound board’s program instead of emulating it instruction by instruction, with identical sound and a game about 25% faster (the first launch after updating takes about a minute longer), fixes fullscreen switching, and matches button labels to your controller. MIT license. 44 of its 48 commits list Claude as a co-author.
You needThe files from your own copies of the arcade games, as MAME lists them, in the run/ folder: for Killer Instinct (kinst), the boot ROM ki-l15d.u98 (or ki-l14.u98), the sound ROMs u10-l1 to u13-l1 and u33-l1 to u36-l1, and the kinst.chd disk; for Killer Instinct 2 (kinst2), ki2-l14.u98, the sound ROMs ki2_l1.u10 to u13 and u33 to u36, and kinst2.chd. The program warns if a file doesn’t match. Plus Windows or Linux.
