Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (MHForever)

Game: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite → (PSP, 2008)

MHForever: unofficial native PC ports of the classic Monster Hunter games through static recompilation, with no emulator. For now only Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in Japan), on PSP, in its European release (ULES01213, v1.01) works; the US and Japanese releases and other games in the series are planned. A launcher sets everything up from your disc image. It runs at 30 fps like the console or at 60 to 180 fps (multiples of 30) with frame interpolation, which is experimental, at several times the original 480×272 resolution and with an optional smoother texture filter; controllers (tested with a DualSense) and the keyboard are rebindable. Saves use the PSP format: you import them from a PSP or PPSSPP and can copy them to PPSSPP. Online play doesn’t exist yet; internet multiplayer is being designed. Version 0.4.1 (October 23) added a Linux download (Ubuntu 24.04 or later, tested by a contributor; untested on the Steam Deck) next to the 64-bit Windows one. According to the maintainer, single player can be played from start to finish, but there are bugs. GPL-3.0 license. It includes and downloads no game assets.

You needYour own copy of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP, European release (ULES01213, v1.01), as a disc image. Plus 64-bit Windows or 64-bit Linux (Ubuntu 24.04 or later; the launcher needs WebKitGTK 4.1 and GTK 3, and the game needs OpenGL 3.3).
