Phobos

Phobos-developers/Phobos

Phobos: a community-made engine extension for Command & Conquer: Yuri’s Revenge, with new features and fixes aimed at mod makers. It’s a DLL (Phobos.dll) that SyringeEx, an extended, open-source version of Syringe, injects into the game’s executable, gamemd.exe: its code hooks into specific addresses in the binary, found by disassembling it. It’s designed to accompany Ares, the other major engine extension, without introducing incompatibilities, but doesn’t need it to work, and it’s compatible with the CnCNet 5 spawner. On its own it changes almost nothing beyond a few fixes: its features are enabled from each mod’s INI files and documented on its website, in Chinese too. They include new projectile trajectories, shields, damage multipliers, a building production queue, new orders for aircraft, parabombs, and dozens of fixes for bugs in the original game. It started in 2020, and its first stable release came out in February 2021. The latest stable release is 0.4.0.2 (January 28), and the latest pre-release, 0.5-alpha2 (October 10), bundles SyringeEx’s Syringe.exe. The README warns that the project isn’t maintained actively enough and is looking for maintainers, though it has received about a hundred commits in the last six weeks. Its contributing guide encourages using AI coding agents (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and similar tools) to write hooks, review code, and write documentation, and the repository includes instructions for them; none of its last 100 commits lists an AI as a co-author.

You needYour own copy of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 with the Yuri’s Revenge expansion for PC. Phobos.dll, Phobos.pdb, and SyringeEx’s Syringe.exe (0.1.0.2 or later) go in the folder with gamemd.exe, and the game is launched through Syringe.exe or Ares’s RunAres.bat. Installing Ares too is recommended for the full feature set. Saves don’t carry over between Phobos versions. Plus Windows.

Romanov's Vengeance (Red Alert 2)

MustaphaTR/Romanovs-Vengeance

A third-party OpenRA mod, based on OpenRA’s Red Alert 2 mod, that aims for a Red Alert 2 with balanced multiplayer, OpenRA’s own improvements, and others taken from more recent Command & Conquer games. It installs like any other mod made with the OpenRAModSDK, and its releases bundle the engine: installers and portable builds for 32- and 64-bit Windows, a Linux AppImage, and a macOS DMG. On first launch it copies Red Alert 2’s and Yuri’s Revenge’s base files and music from your copy of the game. It includes new community-made artwork for units, buildings, icons, and animations, with each author credited, and expanded terrain sets. Its author warns that it’s still in development: even the playtest builds have bugs, a few features of the original game are missing, some artwork is a placeholder, and the planned custom campaign has barely been started. The latest release is playtest-20241215 (December 15, 2024), and the last commit is from July 2025.

You needYour own copy of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge: Red Alert 2’s files can be copied from an English disc (Allied or Soviet), and both games’ files from a The First Decade, Origin, or Steam install. The music is optional. Plus Windows, Linux, or macOS.

Game-specific engine Playable

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 / Yuri's Revenge (VERA20K)

YuriPlanet/vera20k

VERA20K: a community rewrite in Rust of gamemd.exe, the Yuri’s Revenge engine, which uses the original game’s files. It aims to keep the original’s gameplay, look, and atmosphere while adding bigger battles (up to 30 players and 20,000 units on 500×500 maps), familiar RTS features, and a built-in multiplayer client. Today skirmishes are playable on Windows, Linux, and macOS, with base building, harvesting, combat, and saving; campaigns launch but support is incomplete, and LAN and online multiplayer are available in source builds on macOS and Linux. According to the README, most of the code is written by AI coding agents, which study the original engine with Ghidra and check the result with comparison tools. The latest release, 0.2.1 (October 23, 2026), has an installer for 64-bit Windows, a .dmg for Apple silicon macOS, and a Linux AppImage. Licensed GPLv3. The repository includes data comparing against the original game’s behavior (the tools folder, about 760 MB).

You needYour own copy of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 – Yuri’s Revenge; the installer looks for the game’s folder. 64-bit Windows, Apple silicon macOS, or x86-64 Linux.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 / Yuri's Revenge (redalert2-recomp)

sp00nznet/redalert2-recomp

A static recompilation of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and its expansion Yuri’s Revenge, built with pcrecomp, the same author’s toolkit for Windows games: the x86 code of their executables (game.exe 1.006 and gamemd.exe 1.001) is translated to C and compiled on your machine, and each game comes out as its own program. It’s Westwood’s own code recompiled, not a reimplementation like OpenRA. It adds its own Direct3D 11 window, resizable or borderless fullscreen, with sharp, smooth, CRT, nearest-neighbor, or integer scaling; an F10 settings menu; resolutions from 1280×720 to 3840×2160, widescreen and ultrawide, showing more of the battlefield; units, their shadows, and aircraft drawn at twice the resolution from the game’s own voxel models; optional modern controls (left-click to select, right-click to give orders); mods as folders laid over the game’s files without changing them; and LAN multiplayer as shipped. There are native builds for Windows, Linux (a 32-bit program, no Wine), and Apple silicon macOS. Both games pass their 30 automated tests, which cover the menus, skirmishes through to the score screen, and the start of both campaigns, from 720p to 4K. 0.1.0-alpha.1 came out on October 19 with an installer that finds the game, installs the tools, and builds it (30 to 60 minutes the first time), and the latest, 0.1.0-alpha.4, on October 22. 71 of its 72 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own Steam or EA App (Origin) copy of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge: the folder with game.exe and gamemd.exe. The project includes and downloads nothing from the game. Plus about 6 GB of free space; on Windows, Windows 10 or 11 and Visual Studio with the C++ tools (the installer installs the Build Tools if they’re missing); on Linux, 32-bit gcc with 32-bit SDL2 and FFmpeg; and on macOS, an Apple silicon Mac.
