EarthBound / Mother 2 (Phase Distorter)
TheRunaway5/Phase-Distorter
Phase Distorter: a native Linux and Windows port of EarthBound (US) and Mother 2 (Japanese), written in C++20. The 65816 program is translated to C++ from the ebsrc disassembly, keeping the original’s file names and line numbers so every part can be traced back; the game’s assets are imported from your own ROM. It ships 16:9, 21:9, and 32:9 widescreen with expanded scenery, an optional CRT filter, controller support, persistent saves, and a settings window.
You needYour own EarthBound (US, English) or Mother 2 (Japanese) ROM. Neither ROMs nor extracted asset packs are included.
EarthBound (EarthBound Companion)
rages4calm/earthbound-companion
EarthBound Companion: a native Windows port of the US release, with preview builds for Linux, macOS, and Android. It has no engine of its own: it uses BrianPugh/earthbound’s C recreation of the game’s code, derived from the ebsrc disassembly, through seanstaggsQU’s fork, and adds its own patches and a launcher. It has two editions with separate saves: the original EarthBound and a native adaptation of the MaternalBound Redux hack, with its restored text and graphics and its gameplay changes. It offers 720p to 4K and 3440×1440 output, a wider view at 4:3, 16:9, and 21:9, smooth scrolling, image filters and CRT effects, MSU-1 music, remappable keyboard and controller, sprinting, 2x–16x fast-forward, experience and money multipliers, quick saves in five slots, save backups, 46 offline achievements, and Story Shuffle, its own randomizer. The author finished the Redux edition through the credits, and players report finishing both. Version 1.0.0 (October 13) completed the feature set, and the latest, 1.0.12, came out on October 20. Its author states it was made with help from OpenAI Codex. For the Redux edition, setup downloads the source of ShadowOne333’s MaternalBound Redux hack, pinned to one revision of its repository, and builds it on top of your ROM. If you leave it checked, it also downloads from archive.org the 164 tracks of ShadowOne333’s EarthBound MSU-1 music pack; it’s optional, and without it the original music plays.
You needYour own unmodified US EarthBound ROM (3 MiB, with or without the 512-byte header); other revisions and modified ROMs are rejected. Plus x64 Windows, or, for the preview builds, x64 Linux with glibc 2.38 or later, macOS 12 or later, or Android 8.0 or later. Setup needs an internet connection.
EarthBound (seanstaggsQU)
seanstaggsQU/EarthboundNativePublic
An unofficial rebuild of the US version for Windows, macOS, and Linux that, per its README, runs natively with no emulation. The code isn’t published: the repository only holds the offset tables used to extract assets from the ROM (earthbound.yml and mother2.yml), a Makefile, and tests, and the program is distributed in the releases, about 48 to 59 MB each; the README doesn’t explain how it is built. On first launch it builds a game-data pack from your ROM, in under a minute. It offers a Classic 4:3 mode or a Modern mode with widescreen and light visual polish (off by default), saving at any time from the pause menu, self-updating from the title screen, and optional MSU-1 music if you drop a pack into an msu folder. Version 1.7.4 (September 7) is the latest of 19 releases. The catalog already has EarthBound Companion, which uses BrianPugh’s C recreation of the game through a fork by this same author.
You needYour own US EarthBound ROM, dropped into the same folder as the program. Windows, macOS (you have to allow the app in System Settings, Privacy & Security, since it isn’t notarized), or Linux, including the Steam Deck. For high-quality audio, an optional MSU-1 pack in an msu folder.
