Heroes of Might and Magic III (VCMI)
vcmi/vcmi
VCMI - Open Heroes 3: a from-scratch reimplementation of the Heroes of Might and Magic III engine, from file loading and rendering to AI and game mechanics, that uses the original game’s graphics, sound, and text. According to its FAQ, almost every feature of the original is already implemented; it fixes some known bugs, makes other things optional, and its adventure map AI, Nullkiller, is entirely new. It adds high resolutions and interface improvements that remake the most popular HD Mod features, a map editor, a random map generator, online multiplayer from a global lobby with simultaneous turns and turn timers, plus local network play, and a mod system for adding towns, creatures, heroes, artifacts, and spells without limits; the launcher downloads the mods you choose from the project’s repository, among them community ports of parts of Horn of the Abyss and In the Wake of Gods. There are builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and also for Android and iOS. The latest is 1.7.5 (August 15); 1.8.0, in development, adds GPU rendering, initial Lua scripting, and support for the game’s demo. Since November 2025, 36 of its more than 25,000 commits list Claude as a co-author, and three others, from 2023 and 2025, credit ChatGPT with a translation and two fixes; its contribution guidelines accept AI help as long as the contributor understands the change.
You needThe files from your own copy of Heroes of Might and Magic III, Complete or Shadow of Death edition: the launcher extracts them from the GOG offline installer (the .exe and the .bin) or takes them from an existing install (the Data, Maps, and Mp3 folders). Heroes Chronicles is supported too. Plus Windows 7 SP1 or later, macOS (Intel or Apple silicon), or Linux (AppImage for x64 or arm64, or Flathub).
Heroes of Might and Magic III (decompilation)
sushi-shi/homm3-decomp
homm3-decomp: a C++ reconstruction of Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete (HEROES3.EXE, New World Computing, 2000) built with the original toolchain, Visual C++ 6.0 SP3, under Wine, until the result matches the retail executable’s bytes. The Dreamcast and Classic Mac versions serve as references for the code’s structure. In its latest measurement, the Windows HEROES3.EXE matches at 98.93% (4,543 of 4,785 functions exact), the GOG Complete map editor h3maped.exe at 95.96%, and the Mac reference, Heroes_III_raw.pef, at 64.14%. The README marks it as work in progress and asks you to supply your own executables. One release holds the VC6 SP3 toolchain (23 MB), which the homm3 init command downloads on its own. CC0-1.0 license. 20 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author. The repository includes relocation and data tables extracted from the executable (in config/, about 18 MB).
