Ratchet & Clank (rac-rs)

AsobiCodes/rac-rs

rac-rs: an unofficial Windows port written in Rust. On setup it translates the PS2 code from your disc into Rust (static recompilation), and that code runs on a PS2 CPU core also written in Rust; graphics, sound, movies, input, and saving are native code written for the port. Only the original functions that need a fix or a PC feature are rewritten in Rust, and changes are tested by playing the same frames on both versions and comparing the game’s memory. According to its author, the whole game is playable from power-on to the end credits, New Game+ included. It adds widescreen, keyboard and mouse, Xbox and PlayStation controllers, three camera styles (the classic one, a static one with free look and strafing, and a smooth one), lock-on, rebindable controls, and a graphics page with quality levels for enhanced lighting, global illumination, ambient occlusion, dynamic shadows, water with waves and reflections, vegetation, particles, sun rays, draw distance, in-between frames, and a sharp HUD; the “Classic” settings keep the PS2 look. Setup downloads its own copy of Rust, Python, and the GNU assembler (about 220 MB), builds the game in about 12 to 30 minutes depending on the CPU, and checks for updates at launch. Version 0.3.0 came out on October 21. Nine of its twelve commits list Claude as co-author.

You needYour own .iso image of the Ratchet & Clank PS2 disc, European v1.00 (SCES-50916) or US v1.00 (SCUS-97199); the US one has had less testing, and the Japanese release and the Platinum and Greatest Hits reissues aren’t supported. Plus 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, about 5 GB of free space (the finished install takes about 3.5 GB), and an internet connection for the first setup.

Fan remake Experimental

Ratchet & Clank (ReRAC)

re-rac/rerac

ReRAC: a rewrite of Ratchet & Clank (2002) as a native PC game, in Rust on the Bevy engine. The game’s systems are ported and run natively, with no emulator in between, aiming to look, sound, and play like the original. It’s at an early stage: every level loads and renders, but it isn’t playable from start to finish yet. There are alpha builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and a separate launcher that sets the game up from your disc. 74 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own copy of the US PS2 disc (SCUS-97199, version 1.00). No game files are included.

Ratchet & Clank (rac1-native)

RAC-Native/rac1-native-game

rac1-native: a native PC port of Ratchet & Clank (PlayStation 2, 2002), for Linux and Windows. The game’s code is ported to C++ function by function from the North American release (SCUS-97199), and each function is checked against the original code: an oracle runs the original in an R5900 interpreter and compares the results bit for bit. It isn’t an emulator: the game’s code, including the PS2’s vector-unit microcode, runs as native C++, and the 3D is drawn by a renderer of its own (OpenGL, or Vulkan as an experimental option), which allows widescreen, high resolutions, full-detail textures, and a longer draw distance. Setup reads your ISO: it extracts the assets and, with generators, translates much of the MIPS and vector-unit code into C++ (about 2,150 of the 4,000 ported functions), and that generated code stays on your machine, not in the repository. About 1,600 more functions are hand-written. In 0.4.0 (October 18) every planet is ported, from Veldin to the final fight with Drek, with one function left to port; the whole game has been played through, but the second half only once, and it’s tested on Linux only (Windows is experimental). The main branch adds a launcher, an experimental Vulkan renderer, a widescreen HUD option, and 5.1 and 7.1 sound. Support for the European release (SCES-50916) is untested. The repository was created on October 9 and 69 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own ISO of the US PS2 disc (SCUS-97199); the repository contains nothing from the disc. You have to build it with CMake and run the setup script (setup.sh or setup.cmd), which generates code from your ISO; the published releases carry no binaries. Plus Linux or Windows.

Ratchet & Clank (OpenRAC)

OpenRAC/OpenRAC

A matching decompilation of the PlayStation 2 Ratchet & Clank games (Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, and Deadlocked, plus Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, and other versions it lists), matched function by function until it compiles to a byte-identical copy, and a native PC port that builds the whole decompilation into one program, drawn by its own OpenGL renderer, with sound effects, music, and speech; what is still assembly is logged and skipped. The approach is similar to OpenGOAL’s with Jak and Daxter. Ratchet & Clank (PAL) is the first game on PC. A launcher (Tauri) finds your disc images and prepares and starts the game; there is also a Godot 4 level editor that turns your disc’s levels into Godot projects, and a mod SDK (1.3.0, October 22). The proprietary compilers are not included. The releases listed on the releases page are a debug build of the Android launcher and the mod SDK.

You needYour own PlayStation 2 disc images (.iso): Ratchet & Clank (PAL, SCES_509.16) is the first to run on PC. Plus Windows, macOS, or Linux; to work on the decompilations, the proprietary compilers you supply (see toolchains/README.md).
