The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (OpenMW)
Game: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Windows, 2002)
OpenMW: an open-source open-world RPG engine, written from scratch, that lets you play Morrowind; main development and the issue tracker are on GitLab, and GitHub is a mirror. The main quests of Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon can all be completed, and side-quest issues are rare; mods made for the original engine are hit and miss, because its script compiler checks for errors more strictly. It includes OpenMW-CS, a replacement for Bethesda’s Construction Set. It runs at any resolution, with an adjustable field of view, anisotropic filtering, a new water shader with reflection and refraction, a seamless terrain engine with distant terrain, normal, specular, and parallax maps, TrueType fonts, UI scaling, and controller support, and it removes limits of the original, such as the 255 content file cap. It also has a Lua scripting API for mods. Version 0.51.0 (June 19) lets modders create magic effects through that API, adds terrain vertex painting to the editor, and fixes many Lua-related crashes. One of its more than 39,000 commits, from July 28, lists Claude as a co-author.
You needYour own copy of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, with Tribunal and Bloodmoon for their expansions; the launcher finds its files if the game is properly installed (under Wine too). Plus a 64-bit system: Windows 10 or later, macOS 14.8 or later (Intel or Apple silicon), or Linux.
