Fallout 2 (Fallout 2 CE)
Game: Fallout 2 → (Windows, 1998)
Fallout 2 Community Edition: a fully working reimplementation of Fallout 2 for current systems, with the original gameplay, engine bug fixes, and some quality-of-life improvements. It’s based on Fallout 2 Reference Edition, by the same author: the game’s source code reconstructed by reverse engineering the original executable, missing only a few functions the game doesn’t use. On Windows it’s a drop-in replacement for fallout2.exe in the game folder. It keeps bringing in features and fixes from sfall, the community’s engine extension, such as its critical hits, books, elevators, burst fire, and explosions, the wide interface bar, and the side panels, and it adds mouse wheel scrolling and visible loot weight. Window size and fullscreen are set in f2_res.ini. The total conversions Nevada and Sonora, in their original versions, likely work; Restoration Project, Fallout Et Tu, and Olympus 2207 don’t yet. There are builds for Windows and Linux (32- and 64-bit) and for macOS 10.11 or later (Intel and Apple silicon), plus Android and iOS. The latest is 1.3.0 (April 21, 2024), and the last commit is from February 16, 2025.
You needThe files from your own copy of Fallout 2 (master.dat, critter.dat, patch000.dat, and the data folder), for example from GOG, Steam, or the Epic Games Store; on Linux and macOS they can be extracted from the GOG installer with innoextract, and on a Mac the Macplay release works too. Plus Windows, Linux with SDL2, or macOS 10.11 or later.
