Fallout 2 (Falltergeist)
Game: Fallout 2 → (Windows, 1998)
Falltergeist: a new open-source engine for Fallout 2, written in C++ with SDL2 and OpenGL, for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It doesn’t start from the game’s code: it reimplements the engine from scratch and reads the original .dat files, the way OpenXcom or OpenTTD do with their games. By 0.4.0 it could load maps, travel between locations on the world map, use skills on objects, open doors and containers, take ladders, stairs, and elevators, and barter in a basic way, and it had an inventory and a character screen; according to its roadmap, NPCs, combat AI, and full script support were still missing before the game would be playable. That 0.4.0, from May 20, 2022, is its last release, with no published executables, and the last commit is from July 2022. In 2024 one of its main developers wrote that they no longer have time for the project and don’t think it will ever be finished or even playable.
You needThe master.dat and critter.dat files from your own copy of Fallout 2, or the game’s CD mounted. Plus Windows, Linux, or macOS, and building it yourself with SDL2, SDL2_mixer, SDL2_image, GLEW, GLM, and zlib.
