Stronghold Crusader (OpenSHC)
Game: Stronghold Crusader → (Windows, 2002)
OpenSHC: an open-source reimplementation of Stronghold Crusader 1 that builds as a DLL loaded when the game starts: functions that have a functionally identical reimplementation are hooked so that the new versions run instead of the originals. It advances step by step toward an identical reimplementation, with tools that track progress and a tutorial for contributors; modding the game is for now beyond its scope, though the project cites it as a motivation. It requires the game at version 1.41 in a Latin-script language (English, German…), preferably from Steam or GOG. The only published release, “latest-sarif” (updated September 27), is not a game: it offers starter .cpp files and a SARIF file for working with Ghidra, generated from the game’s executable (about 4 and 3 MB). 38 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.
You needYour own copy of Stronghold Crusader 1 version 1.41, in a Latin-script language, from Steam or GOG. To build it, CMake 3.24 or later, Python 3, and clang-format 22 or later; there is no prebuilt version.
