Link: The Faces of Evil
Game: Link: The Faces of Evil (1993)
An unofficial native port of Link: The Faces of Evil (Philips CD-i, 1993) for Windows, made by static recompilation: the game’s 68000 machine code is translated ahead of time into C, and a small runtime provides what the code expects from the console, namely the CD-RTOS (OS-9) operating system, the CD file manager, the video decoder, and the ADPCM audio processor. Two modules are recompiled, the game itself (about 39,000 instructions) and the Philips logo animation. The build produces two programs that share the same code and saves: linkfoe.exe, with the original look and sharp, smooth, CRT, and nearest filters, and linkfoe_hd.exe, which adds the Cartoon HD and Cartoon HD+ upscalers. It draws with Direct3D 11 at the full window resolution, including 4K, with aspect modes for widescreen (the game’s picture is 4:3), save states in ten slots, run-ahead of up to six fields to reduce input lag, and smooth sprite motion at 60 frames per second. The README doesn’t state a progress level. Version 1.0.0 was published on October 21. Its only commit lists Claude as a co-author.
You needYour own image of the Link: The Faces of Evil disc, as a .bin and .cue (the README gives “Link - The Faces of Evil (USA)” as an example). The installer and the portable zip don’t include the disc; on first start the game asks for the image and saves its path in linkfoe.ini. Windows 10 or later; to build from source, Visual Studio 2022 with the C++ compiler, CMake 3.16, and Python 3.8.
