Mario's Tennis

Game: Mario's Tennis (Virtual Boy, 1995)

A static recompilation of the Virtual Boy Mario’s Tennis with vbrecomp, the author’s own framework: the cartridge’s V810 code is translated to C once, function by function, and compiled to native code, while the runtime library reimplements video (VIP), sound (VSU), interrupts, and timers. A full match against the CPU completes, and the title screen matches Beetle VB pixel for pixel; version 0.2.0 (June 29) fixed the speed, which ran at double, and locked it to the console’s 50.27 Hz. It shows one eye’s image or, with an option, both stacked. It has the recomp-ui launcher with its own Virtual Boy theme, rebindable keyboard and controller input, and a mod catalog that leaves the ROM untouched; since 0.2.2 (September 8) it includes an experimental mod, off by default, that colors characters, portraits, court, and scoreboard using material masks over the original art. Version 0.2.3 (October 19) reached the courts with all seven characters in singles and doubles. The download is for 64-bit Windows; there were Linux and macOS builds. The repository includes the C code generated from the ROM (about 17 MB). 7 of its 23 commits list Claude as a co-author.
