Recompiler Experimental

neogeorecomp

A static recompilation toolkit for Neo Geo (MVS/AES) games. m68krecomp translates the 68000 program to C and the runtime models the board: video, palette, I/O, the Z80 sound CPU and the MVS system ROM. Its README marks it alpha (v0.2.0, October 21); Metal Slug and Neo Drift Out are playable. It includes no ROMs or generated code. 45 of its 47 commits list Claude as a co-author.

Neo Geo Experimental

Metal Slug

sp00nznet/metalslug

A static recompilation of Metal Slug for Neo Geo (MVS) into a native PC program, built with neogeorecomp, the same author’s toolkit for this board: the 68000 code is translated to C from your ROMs and runs on a model of the board. It’s the toolkit’s reference game. It boots through the real MVS BIOS, runs the attract demo and title screen, takes coins, and plays Mission 1 with its continues; later missions haven’t been checked by a test script yet. After a profiling pass, a 5-minute automated session runs entirely in recompiled code, and verification against the Musashi interpreter finds no mismatches across 14.06 million blocks. It has sound (the YM2610 synthesis danilopaulinodasilva contributed to the toolkit) and supports two controllers as players 1 and 2. 0.1.0 came out on October 21 with installers for Windows, Linux, and macOS that download the source, install whatever is missing, and build the game from your ROMs; it hasn’t been played on a Mac yet. All 13 of its commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own Metal Slug and Neo Geo BIOS dumps as MAME sets, mslug.zip (NGH-201) and neogeo.zip, which setup checks by CRC32. Plus Windows, Linux, or macOS; setup offers to install Git, CMake, the C and C++ compiler, and SDL2 if they’re missing.

Neo Drift Out: New Technology

sp00nznet/neodriftout

A static recompilation of Neo Drift Out for Neo Geo (MVS) into a native PC program, built with neogeorecomp, the same author’s toolkit for this board: the 68000 code is translated to C from your ROMs and runs on a model of the board, with no game-specific code in the toolkit. It boots through the real MVS BIOS, runs the car showcase, title, and name entry, takes coins, and races the practice run and Stage 1; later stages haven’t been checked by a test script yet. A 6-minute automated session runs entirely in recompiled code, and verification against the Musashi interpreter finds no mismatches across 46.67 million blocks. This version replaces an earlier one, hand-built for this game, that never got past the title with correct graphics. It has sound (the YM2610 synthesis danilopaulinodasilva contributed to the toolkit) and supports two controllers as players 1 and 2. 0.2.0 came out on October 21 with installers for Windows, Linux, and macOS that download the source, install whatever is missing, and build the game from your ROMs; it hasn’t been played on a Mac yet. 36 of its 37 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own Neo Drift Out and Neo Geo BIOS dumps as MAME sets, neodrift.zip and neogeo.zip, which setup checks by CRC32 (driftout.zip is Taito’s Drift Out, a different game). Plus Windows, Linux, or macOS; setup offers to install Git, CMake, the C and C++ compiler, and SDL2 if they’re missing.
