San Francisco Rush 2049
n64hub/rush-2049-recomp
A native PC port of the Nintendo 64 version, made by static recompilation: the game’s MIPS code is translated to C with N64Recomp and run natively on N64ModernRuntime, with RT64 as the renderer; it is not an emulator. The README states that almost all of the code was written by AI agents (Claude), directed and play-tested by a person. On Windows the menus, Single Race, Circuit, Ghost Race, Stunt, and Battle run at full speed, all six tracks race through to the results screen, two- and four-player split screen renders, and Controller Pak saves survive a restart. The Linux build reaches the title screen and the first attract race with a software Vulkan driver, but nobody has played it on a Linux GPU. It adds high resolution, enlarged menu and HUD text, game logic at 60 frames per second, and options with an Original value, and it also builds as a web page. Version 0.1.27 (October 29) is the latest. 59 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.
You needYour own San Francisco Rush 2049 (U) ROM, the US release, as a .z64 with SHA-1 3f99351d7bb61656614bdb2aa1a90cfe55d1922c; other regions and revisions are not supported. Plus Windows, or x86-64 Linux with glibc 2.35 or newer, a Vulkan driver, GTK 3, and FreeType.
San Francisco Rush: The Rock / 2049 (ProjectR)
ProjectR: an unofficial native port of two Atari Games arcade racers, San Francisco Rush: The Rock (1997) and San Francisco Rush 2049 (1999), to Windows, macOS, and Linux. It’s built through reverse engineering, runs on its own Vulkan engine, and takes the game data from your own dump of the arcade hard drive. For 2049 it uses the Special Edition’s physics, collision, and car handling, though it also accepts the Tournament Edition drive. You can set resolution and refresh rate, keep the HUD at 4:3 or push it to the edges of a widescreen display, and adjust draw distance, anti-aliasing, and anisotropic filtering. It plays with Xbox or PlayStation controllers, or a wheel and pedals with force feedback; keyboard and mouse driving isn’t supported yet. It has an explorer mode with no time or lap limit when drones are off, and in 2049 a cheats menu and the option to import profiles, fast times, and ghosts from the drive or from MAME. Pausing isn’t possible yet. It’s free and closed source, and its author describes it as a work in progress without a finish date. Version 0.7.1 (July 15, 2025) lets you choose, option by option, between the original 2049 design and the Tournament Edition one.
You needYour own dump of the arcade hard drive, as a MAME CHD or raw image. For The Rock, sfrushrk plus the four audio ROMs (audio.u62, audio.u61, audio.u53, and audio.u49, loose or in a ZIP); the original San Francisco Rush drive (sfrush) is optional and adds the white color to the eight original cars. For 2049, the Special Edition (sf2049se) or Tournament Edition (sf2049te or sf2049tea) drive. Plus a Vulkan 1.2 graphics card, an x86-64-v2 CPU (or Apple silicon on a Mac), and Windows 10 (1903) or later, macOS 10.15 or later, or Linux with glibc 2.35 and libstdc++ 12 or later. A controller or a wheel and pedals is required.
