Black
2 recomps and 1 port
Black (TGP482)
TGP482/BLACK-XBERecomp
A native Windows port of the Xbox version, built with XboxXBE-Recomp, the same author’s static recompilation tool. On first launch it compiles the game’s code for your machine. It replaces the original 640×480 with your monitor’s resolution and adds a 20–200% render scale, a 45–140° field of view, frame rates beyond the Xbox’s 30 fps cap, HDR, up to 8x MSAA and SMAA, ambient occlusion (SSAO or GTAO), and up to 16x draw distance. It has keyboard and mouse with raw input and rebindable controls, and SDL3 controller support with gyro aiming. V2 (October 18) added a controller options page and put every option page in the pause menu.
You needThe files from your own copy of Black for Xbox, US or European release, as an ISO or extracted. Plus 64-bit Windows 10, a CPU with SSE4.2, and a Direct3D 12 graphics card. Building it requires the US release’s default.xbe.
Black (Spark198rus)
Spark198rus/black-pc
An unofficial native Windows port of the Xbox version, independent from TGP482’s recomp and built a different way: nothing is recompiled. Since the Xbox has an x86 CPU, black.exe loads the default.xbe from your copy and runs the original code directly on the PC’s CPU; what gets replaced is what the game uses from the console: the kernel, Direct3D 8 (on Direct3D 9), DirectSound (on XAudio2), and the controller library. It offers any render resolution, anti-aliasing, 16:9 widescreen (the game’s own mode) or 4:3, an adjustable field of view, 60 fps by default or the original 30, mouse look, keys bound to the game’s actions, XInput controllers, room reverb, skippable movies, and auto-aim off by default. Its settings live in the game’s own menus (Options > PC SETTINGS and the pause menu). It also fixes flickering seams on destructible objects and a grid pattern in the blur effects, which the Xbox’s low resolution hid. At 60 fps something may still run at the wrong speed, on-screen prompts show Xbox controller buttons, and 3D sound is approximate. On Linux it runs through Wine 9 and DXVK. Its README says the game is fully playable. Version 0.2.0 (October 14) is the only release so far, and its README says it was developed with Claude Code.
You needYour own copy of Black for Xbox, NTSC-U release (title 45410083), dumped to an ISO and extracted with extract-xiso into a game folder; default.xbe must match the SHA-256 given in the README. The European PAL release is supported in the code since October 21, not yet in a published release. Plus 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 (the program is 32-bit) and a Direct3D 9 (Shader Model 3) graphics card; on Linux, Wine 9 or later with DXVK and a Vulkan 1.1 card.
Black (portingpete)
portingpete/Black-2006-Recomp
Black 2006 Recomp: a static recompilation of the Xbox version for Windows, separate from TGP482’s and Spark198rus’s ports and built with xboxrecomp; on Linux it runs through Wine or Proton, and since alpha.2 it can be built entirely on Linux. It draws with Direct3D 11 and has keyboard and mouse, XInput controllers, and native audio. Its launcher checks your disc, copies it, installs any missing tools with winget, and builds the game on your machine; it also has settings, key rebinding, a save editor to unlock missions, and menus in six languages. It adds ambient occlusion (SSAO, HBAO, HBAO+, or GTAO), screen-space reflections in place of the 128×128 environment maps, a wider field of view, a photo mode, checkpoints kept between sessions, an optional crosshair and hit markers, and experimental two-player split screen. It optionally supports the BLACK HD Reimagined texture pack, made for the PS2 version and downloaded separately from ModDB, through a table that pairs 1,161 game textures with the pack’s files. It has been tested through the first mission; the rest hasn’t been played through. The latest published release, 0.1.0-alpha.2, came out on October 14. Its README says it was developed with help from Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. The repository includes translations of the game’s 1,724 menu texts into five languages and subtitles for nine cutscenes, with an English transcript of their dialogue and its translations; the original menu text is taken from your copy.
You needYour own copy of Black for Xbox, the supported release (default.xbe must match the SHA-256 given in the README), as an ISO (XISO or a full Redump dump) or an extracted folder; other releases and the PS2 version won’t work. Plus 64-bit Windows, a CPU with AVX2, and a Direct3D 11 graphics card; building needs Visual Studio 2022’s C++ tools, CMake, Python, and Rust, which the launcher can install. On Linux, Wine or Proton with native d3dcompiler_47.
