N64

Super Mario 64

n64decomp/sm64

A full C decompilation of Super Mario 64 in five versions: Japanese, US, European, Shindou, and iQue Player. It builds ROMs identical to the originals, checked by their hashes, while naming and documentation of the code and data structures are still in progress. The NON_MATCHING option uses functionally equivalent C where the code doesn’t match byte for byte and avoids undefined behavior. It builds on Linux, on Windows through WSL, on macOS, or with Docker, and on its own it only produces N64 ROMs: the sm64-port PC port is based on it. Its last major update, “Refresh 16,” is from August 17, 2023. Textures, sounds, and music are extracted from your own ROM, but the repository includes the game’s models, collision, and level data written as C.

Super Mario 64 (SM64Plus)

MorsGames/sm64plus

SM64Plus: a fork of the sm64-port PC port focused on customization, with settings that fix problems in the original and expand the game, nearly all optional. It offers more responsive controls, an improved camera, an extended moveset, the option to stay in the level after getting a star, extra modes such as Encore, Green Demon, and Hard Mode, 60 fps through interpolation, and bug fixes, plus presets such as “Vanilla” to play it like the original. It includes no game assets: a launcher, made with GameMaker, builds the game on your machine from your ROM and manages the settings. Version 4.0 (March 11, 2026) switched to OpenGL only, added V-Sync, MSAA anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, an N64-style blur, and fixes for the text’s typos, and reworked the internal resolution. Its author considers it feature complete.

You needYour own US Super Mario 64 ROM (.z64) and an internet connection during setup, since the launcher downloads what it needs to build the game. The launcher is for Windows; for Linux there are launcher builds and a guide to build it by hand, Steam Deck included; there’s no guide for macOS.

N64 Experimental

Super Mario 64

n64hub/super-mario-64-recomp

A native PC port of the US Nintendo 64 version, made by static recompilation: the game’s MIPS code is translated to C with N64Recomp and run natively on N64ModernRuntime, with RT64 as the renderer and RecompFrontend’s launcher and menus; the symbols come from the n64decomp/sm64 decompilation. It is not an emulator. The README states that almost all of the code was written by AI agents (Claude), directed and play-tested by a person. The desktop build has sound, EEPROM saves, and keyboard and gamepad input, and draws at the display’s rate while the game logic stays at 30; Bob-omb Battlefield has been played from the file select through King Bob-omb’s star and back to the castle. It offers high resolution, optional hi-res text, and options with an Original value, and it also builds as a web page using WebGPU. Version 0.1.2 (October 27) is the latest. 64 of its 98 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own Super Mario 64 (USA) ROM as a big-endian .z64 with SHA-1 9bef1128717f958171a4afac3ed78ee2bb4e86ce. Plus Windows, or x86-64 Linux with glibc 2.35 or newer, a Vulkan driver, GTK 3, and FreeType.
