Vagrant Story

ser-pounce/rood-reverse

Rood Reverse, the Vagrant Story (PS1) decompilation, aiming at interoperability with modern hardware and at fixing the original game’s bugs. The menu code and data are fully decompiled and the menu executables are relocatable, so that code can be rewritten and links from other modules are re-resolved. 48 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.

Port (decomp) Experimental

Vagrant Story

JEschete/VS-NativePort

Vagrant Story Native: a native source port of the US release for x64 Windows, written in modern C++ from the rood-reverse decompilation, which is also in this catalog. It doesn’t emulate the PlayStation: the game logic is reorganized into its own C++ systems, with no BIOS, no emulated memory, and no MIPS code. An extractor converts every file on your disc up front into open formats (JSON, glTF, PNG, WAV, and AV1 video), and the game reads only that output. It’s at an early stage: it runs the original boot and title code, with the logos, intro movie, and music, and attract and early New Game scenes render, but interactive combat, rendering parity, full sound, and memory cards aren’t there yet.

You needA 1:1 dump of your own US Vagrant Story disc (SLUS-01040), as .bin and .cue. To build it, 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with Visual Studio 2026 and its Clang toolset, Git, an internet connection the first time, and FFmpeg 6.0 or later to convert the movies.

PS1 Playable

Vagrant Story

riotashley81-jpg/vagrantstory_recomp

An unofficial native PC build of Vagrant Story, made with psxrecomp and the recomp-ui launcher. The repository contains no game data and no code translated from it; the Windows build carries none of the game’s code either: it reads it from your disc when you play. On first launch it compiles the battle engine, menus, and title screen from your disc in the background with a bundled gcc (it can take an hour or more and is cached); until then, and for everything else, it runs the code through psxrecomp’s interpreter and TinyCC. The extras are packages toggled from the launcher’s Mods page, all on by default: widescreen (16:9 by default), a button prompt bar, a right-stick camera, skippable logos, exit options, and PGXP; a 60 FPS mode is marked experimental and off. Version 0.1.11 (October 25) is the latest release. All 14 of its commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own copy of Vagrant Story (USA, SLUS-01040) as a .cue + .bin image, and 64-bit Windows (the published build is VagrantStoryRecompiled-win-x64.zip).
