AutoTMC

Game: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap → (GBA, 2004)

A desktop application in Python, with a CustomTkinter interface, that automates the installation and management of releases of TMC, 999sian’s port of The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (the application’s code queries that repository). It shows the releases published on GitHub with their notes, downloads and installs the one you pick, manages and verifies the ROM, optionally checks for updates, and keeps the installed versions and ROMs in an SQLite database. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux with Python 3.14 or later; the repository also includes AutoTMC-Windows.exe. You must supply your own ROM. Version 1.0.2 (May 8, marked as a prerelease) is the latest release.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Jorge262007)

Jorge262007/FFTARecomp

FFTARecomp: a native recompilation of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, and Android, based on JRickey’s gba-recomp. A one-click installer recompiles the game from your ROM, and no console BIOS is needed. It adds widescreen (16:10 to 32:9), zoom, video and audio options, fast forward with three audio modes, a redesigned menu, adjustable text bubbles, XInput gamepad support, and, experimentally, mouse and touch controls. Version 3.0 (October 18) brought the Android build, European ROM support, and a much lighter installer. It’s still a work in progress. One of its 29 commits lists Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own Final Fantasy Tactics Advance ROM, US or European release. Plus Windows 10 or 11, x86-64 Linux, a Steam Deck, or Android.

Mother 3

josiahg2502-glitch/Mother3Recomp

MOTHER 3 Recomp: a recompilation for Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, and Android, built with gbarecomp and recomp-ui, with support for fan translation patches. It has its own launcher showing the party walking through the crossroads outside Tazmily, drawn from your ROM, which also handles first-time setup. It adds true 16:9 widescreen in the field, battles, and cutscenes, on-screen buttons that match your controller or keyboard, window, scaling, and color options, high-quality audio mixing, and mods as .ips, .bps, or .ups patches. Version 1.0.7 came out on October 18. The download contains no game art: everything comes from your ROM. 34 of its 86 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own Japanese MOTHER 3 ROM and your Game Boy Advance BIOS; to play in another language, a fan translation patch. Plus x64 Windows, x86-64 Linux, or Android.

Golden Sun / Golden Sun: The Lost Age

Shmargus/GSRecomp

Golden Sun Recompiled: native Windows and Linux (Steam Deck included) ports of Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age, made by static recompilation with a modified copy of gbarecomp, with no GBA BIOS needed. Code that shows up during play without having been prepared ahead of time runs briefly through an interpreter while it’s compiled. A single launcher prepares each game from your ROM, with a compiler included in the download. According to its README, the first game is playable through to the ending credits, while The Lost Age, added in 0.5, is still experimental. It adds an expanded widescreen view, from 3:2 to 16:9, with its own GPU renderer for the field, world map, and battles, color profiles, screen filters, color vision settings, walking speed, encounter rate, 2x battle speed, a hard mode, a cheat menu, and rebindable controls; Seamless mode carries the finished first game’s save into the second without passwords. Both are test builds with known bugs. Its README notes that parts of the project were made with AI tools, and 26 of its 28 commits list Claude as co-author. Version 0.5.3 came out on October 20.

You needYour own Golden Sun (SHA-1 5c4695205413df7db52b9a184815a07783999971) and Golden Sun: The Lost Age (SHA-1 b500663220cb9bf56b9f8e8c0c544f1d6fa3a824) ROMs, US/European release; the launcher can skip the check for patched ROMs, unsupported. Plus Windows 10 or 11, or 64-bit Linux with SDL2 and OpenGL.

Pokémon Emerald (mstan)

mstan/EmeraldRecomp

Static recompilation of Pokémon Emerald for Windows, Linux, and Android with gbarecomp. The ROM’s ARM7TDMI code is translated to C, and the console’s real BIOS is recompiled and run too; code the recompiler didn’t cover runs through an interpreter the first time, is compiled to native code, and is saved for later launches. It gets into gameplay, though its author still presents it as a preview. From the pret/pokeemerald decompilation it only takes function names and addresses, not its code. Since 0.1.0 it has two-player netplay, over the internet or LAN, with input delay or rollback: each machine simulates both consoles and the link cable, which has been play-tested; 0.1.1 added the Wireless Adapter for the Union Room, still experimental, with no trades or battles verified that way. It also has an experimental overworld widescreen mod (fit to window, 16:9, 21:9, or 32:9, portrait included) that shows more scenery and characters, another mod that makes the in-game clock follow your computer’s time, and, on Android, its own touch controls: tap to walk, draw a path with your finger, or pick moves directly in battle. Version 0.1.2 came out on October 18. 31 of its 74 commits list Claude as a co-author.

You needYour own US Pokémon Emerald ROM (SHA-1 f3ae088181bf583e55daf962a92bb46f4f1d07b7) and a dump of your Game Boy Advance BIOS. Plus 64-bit Windows, x86-64 Linux, or Android 9 or later on ARM64. For netplay, both players need the same recomp release and the same ROM.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (james2doyle)

james2doyle/ffta-recomp

FFTA Recomp: a static recompilation of the US release for Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, and Android, built with gbarecompx, the same author’s fork of gbarecomp. It’s a separate project from Jorge262007’s FFTARecomp. All the code that runs is translated ahead of time, with no interpreter fallback. No Nintendo BIOS is needed, since it bundles emibios, a free clean-room BIOS. It adds a widescreen view up to 448 pixels wide, a shader stack (MMPX edge smoothing, sharp scaling, pixel grid, LCD subpixel grille, dithering), experimental frame interpolation, LCD ghosting and several GBA screen modes, 2–10x fast forward, save states, and keyboard, controller, and touch controls. Version 2.0 (October 19) moved the engine from SDL to raylib, with a launch screen showing the box art, and brought a Steam Deck AppImage. Its README places it in R.A.I.D. (Retro AI Development), a static recompilation community, and for context points to an article on making these recompilations with AI.

You needYour own US Final Fantasy Tactics Advance ROM (AFXE, SHA-1 4ac05441f4de70a4ec3dd932116346c61b8783d9). Plus 64-bit Windows 10 or later, x86-64 Linux with OpenGL and X11 or XWayland, SteamOS 3, or Android 9 or later on arm64.

Dragon Ball Z: Buu's Fury (mstan)

mstan/DragonBallZBuusFuryRecomp

Static recompilation of Dragon Ball Z: Buu’s Fury for Windows with gbarecomp. The US release boots, goes through the attract sequence, and gets into gameplay, and its tests cover attract mode, gameplay, and automated traversal routes in native code without falling back to the interpreter; even so, its author presents it as an experimental release that hasn’t been tested from start to finish. It has a launcher to pick the ROM and BIOS and set up video, audio, controls, and mods, sharp scaling or optional filtering, an in-game settings menu, and save states. It includes an optional adaptive widescreen mod that, as the window widens, expands the overworld and HUD up to 480×160 without stretching the image or moving the camera. Version 0.0.4 (October 18) updated the engine and launcher. 4 of its 15 commits list Claude as a co-author.

The ROM’s ARM7TDMI code is translated to C, and the console’s real BIOS is recompiled and run too. Both games boot and get into gameplay, but its author presents it as an early preview: code the recompiler didn’t cover runs through an interpreter the first time, is compiled to native code on the fly, and is saved to disk for later launches. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (mstan)

mstan/MinishCapRecomp

Static recompilation of The Minish Cap for Windows with gbarecomp; it was that framework’s first target and, according to its author, the most mature of their GBA recomps. The ROM’s ARM7TDMI code is translated to C, and the console’s real BIOS is recompiled and run too instead of being imitated. It gets into gameplay (the overworld, dialogue, and save states work), but it’s still a preview: code the recompiler didn’t cover runs through an interpreter the first time, is compiled to native code on the fly, and is saved to disk for later launches. From the zeldaret/tmc decompilation it only takes function names and addresses, not its code, and it’s a separate project from Project Picori, the port built on that decompilation. It has a pre-boot launcher to pick the ROM and BIOS and set up video, audio, and controls, save states, and an optional adaptive widescreen mod that widens the view from 240 to up to 480 pixels as the window gets wider. Version 0.0.6 (October 18) updated the engine and launcher. 50 of its 100 commits list Claude as a co-author, and another says it was written in a Codex session.

Pokémon Ruby / Sapphire (mstan)

mstan/RubySapphireRecomp

Static recompilation of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire for Windows with gbarecomp, with a separate executable and download for each game. The ROM’s ARM7TDMI code is translated to C, and the console’s real BIOS is recompiled and run too. Both games boot and get into gameplay, but its author presents it as an early preview and warns that, as the oldest Generation III engine, it should have a few more boot, save, and clock quirks than their FireRed and Emerald recomps. Code the recompiler didn’t cover runs through an interpreter the first time, is compiled to native code on the fly, and is saved to disk for later launches. From the pret/pokeruby decompilation it only takes function names and addresses, not its code. It has a pre-boot launcher to pick the ROM and BIOS and set up video, audio, and controls, save states, and an optional Absolute RTC mod that makes the in-game clock follow your computer’s time. Version 0.0.5 (October 18) updated the engine and launcher. 15 of its 28 commits list Claude as a co-author.

WarioWare: Twisted!

mstan/WarioWareTwistedRecomp

Static recompilation of WarioWare: Twisted! for Windows and Android with gbarecomp, turning the cartridge’s built-in gyroscope into native controls. The game boots and runs with its menus, microgames, saves, and gyro stages; on desktop, all 223 of its microgames were tested, about ten seconds each, without falling back to the interpreter. On Windows, tilt comes from a compatible controller’s motion sensor, such as a DualSense, or, failing that, from dragging the mouse horizontally; on Android, from the phone’s own gyroscope, with touch controls. It has a launcher to pick the ROM and BIOS and set up controls and gyro sensitivity, fullscreen, and save states. Its author presents it as an experimental release. Windows 0.0.2 and Android 0.0.5 came out on October 18 and switched to the real recompiled BIOS by default. 10 of its 40 commits list Claude as a co-author.

Mega Man Zero

mstan/MegaManZeroRecomp

Static recompilation of Mega Man Zero for Windows with gbarecomp. The ROM’s ARM and Thumb code is translated to C++ ahead of time, and the console’s real BIOS is recompiled and run too. According to its README, it gets into gameplay with working controls, audio, and cartridge SRAM saves, and is comfortable to play; the tested routes through the opening mission run entirely as native code, and if the game reaches uncovered code, that stretch runs through an interpreter, gets logged, and can be compiled to native code. The BIOS boot animation is skipped by default. It has a pre-boot launcher to pick the ROM and BIOS and set up video, audio, and controls, save states, fast forward, and an optional widescreen mod that widens stages from 240 to up to 480 pixels, with Zero’s HUD and the boss gauge anchored to the edges; it’s experimental, and on untested routes enemies can pop in. Version 0.0.7 came out on October 18. 13 of its 32 commits list Claude as a co-author.

A fork of mstan’s recomp that uses the gbarecomp runtime and adds a fast boot, wider static coverage (the starting area validates as fully static, with a crash fix at a bridge), support for three equivalent dumps of the US version and for the Spanish translation, and an English and Spanish launcher. It includes an optional adaptive widescreen mod, which reveals real world in the margins (up to 480×160) without stretching the image, plus cheats through the CodeBreaker Advance engine, multipliers, a save editor, autosave, save states, fast-forward and rewind, and a corrected audio output. Metroid Fusion

Zaxaerith/MetroidFusionRecomp

A Windows recompilation of the US version of Metroid Fusion, with GBARecomp and recomp-ui pinned to a specific version. It is an experimental preview: the README warns that full-game compatibility isn’t exhaustively tested, that an interpreter fallback remains, and that runtime compilation is off by default, so it is not a fully static or native release. You download a ZIP, pick the ROM and BIOS in the launcher, and press Play; the settings, the configurable controls, and the save stay next to the executable. The generated code stays local, out of Git and out of the release ZIPs. The only release, 0.1.0-preview, is from October 2.

What has been verified is a strict-static run on x86-64 Linux that reached the intro, title, a new game, several early rooms, and a Save Room, with a save and load round-trip of the SRAM, with no unresolved dispatches or interpreted instructions. According to the README, compatibility with the full game, the European version, and running on Windows are not yet confirmed. There is an optional graphical launcher and test packages for Windows and Linux; beta 4, from October 2, is the latest. 56 of its last 100 commits list Claude as a co-author.

Green Rescue Team is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team recompiled to run natively on PC, with a few enhancements and mod support. It uses GBARecomp and GBAModernRuntime, which the author is also testing with this project, and the README itself warns that it is a work in progress, with bugs and changes without notice. The first time it asks for the ROM and keeps its own copy; to build from source, that ROM is recompiled with the symbols from the pret/pmd-red project. There are packages for Windows, Linux, and macOS (0.1.0, from September 26) of about 55 MB each. The repository includes a few .bin title-menu pictures, used to extend the margins in widescreen, which we couldn’t check are original work or derive from the game.

Sonic Advance

smiluredev/SonicAdvanceRecomp

An unofficial native port of Sonic Advance, made by static recompilation with GBARecomp: the game’s ARM code is translated into C, with no CPU emulation, with an SDL2 backend, shaders that imitate the GBA screen, enhanced audio, and targets for Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android. The README describes those features and how to run the gba-pack tool, but doesn’t say which parts work. The repository includes code generated from the game: three C files, SonicAdvance-bios.0.c, .1.c, and .2.c, of between 10 and 17 MB, which declare in their header that they derive from the input image and must not be distributed, and a prebuilt SonicAdvance-bios.so of 10 MB; the README claims it contains nothing copyrighted. The only release, V1, is from August 22 and ships a Linux package of about 5.9 MB.

You needYour own ROM of Sonic Advance for the GBA (SonicAdvance.gba) and the GBA BIOS (gba_bios.bin), whose SHA-256 values are entered in pack.toml. To build, clang or gcc, CMake, Ninja, and SDL2 (the README gives the steps for Linux).
